East bound and down...

First of all Happy Birthday Jill. Hope it was a good one.

Well, we crossed four state lines today. Started in Ohio, crossed the little neck of land in northern West Virginia, went into Pennsylvania, crossed back into West Virginia again, and finally ended up in Maryland. It was a great day for traveling until we got into Maryland and it was like San Francisco traffic squeezed down into two lanes. NOT FUN! I'm no dummy, I let dad drive.... bet we got great mileage.

Tomorrow we go looking for Huff Stuff. We are going into Martinsburg to look up Peter Huff, dad's great, great, great grandfather. He is also the father of Adam Huff. Should be fun seeing what we can find.

We will really be happy to meet up with Pete and Linda tomorrow. Dad is going to give us a tour of the monuments at night tomorrow evening. D.C. here we come!

Sept. 5 update (Ohio): Don't want you to get sick of hearing from us so I'll make it a quick hello from Ohio. A beautiful day to be on the road today. Lots of sun, very little wind, and wonderful scenery.

We are in a very peaceful camp in Zanesville, Ohio tonight. Just got back from a walk and wanted to check in with all of you. Tomorrow we leave Ohio, go briefly into West Virginia, then into Pennsylvania, back into West Virginia and end to day in Hagersville, Maryland. We will send the night about 82 miles from our campground outside Washington D.C. Before we head for D.C. we will be doing some exploring on Tuesday morning trying to track down some history on Peter Huff one of dad's distant grandfathers. We'll know more in the next few days and keep you informed.

Sept. 4 update (Indiana): Well we finally had a day with very little wind. Indiana is beautiful. We started thinking of Kathy as soon as we hit the border. Dad drove almost all of the 412 miles today, but the time seemed to go by very quickly. Illinois was beautiful too .... lots of green rolling hills and more corn fields. The road was great and since we didn't have to fight the wind all day, the trip was wonderful. One of those days when you just enjoy sitting and watching the world go by.

Yesterday was a first for us. We've been passed by cars, buses, trucks, other motor homes, motorcycles, almost everything but yesterday Dad was driving along and I looked over his shoulder and we were slowly being passed by a train. Not just the engines of the train ... I had counted 83 cars passing us before it turned off. I guess we just don't go that fast. Oh well.... maybe we've become the old people we've made fun of all these years. Good thing we both like trains.

....

Sept. 3 update (Iowa): Dad and I are in camp in beautiful downtown Newton, Iowa. Another very windy day.... when you're driving a motor home, windy days are not the best. Lots and lots of corn fields .... actually miles and miles of corn fields. Tomorrow is Illinois and maybe the wind will go away. Nothing really fascinating to tell you about today, but I just feel connected to all of you when I write. Hope all is well in the Huff, Hansen, and Huff households.

We'll keep you posted. Much love,

Mom
